An economic indicator and it helps determine how the average citizen is doing economically and it is calculated by adding the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to the annual inflation rate.
Fact - Data for the annual inflation rate is available back to 1914, data for the misery index is only available back to 1948 due to the lack of unemployment numbers prior to 1948.

Fact - US unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent in October 2016 from 5 percent in the previous month and in line with market expectations. The number of unemployed persons was almost unchanged at 7.9 million while the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.1 percentage point to 62.8 percent
