Lack of Technology in the US
< Problems
Little infrastructure in the US
Little to no paved roads
Cities had the only paved roads
No electricity in many places
No access to any electricity-making resource
River transportation minimal
Drops in the rivers disallowed barges, boats, and ferries
Ground transportation slow and inefficient
Little paved roads or highway and interstate travel systems not designed
No clean water sources
Many places simply had unsanitary water basins to live off of
Problems >
Little technology in the States
Less than 20% of rural areas had electricity
Electric poles not avalible to rural areas
No agricultural effciency
No real advancement in machines, relied on human labor during Depression
No access to entertainment
No one could view movies, hear radio, or see art
Terrible and unhealthy living conditions
Only shantytowns during the Depression with no real buildings or facilities
Programs (Infrastructure)
PWA (Public Works Administration)
Designed and built large scale infrastructure projects
Dams to provide electrciity
Locks for better river travel
Bridges/tunnels to increase ground travel
A vast highway and interstate system for transportation
More railways for agriculture transporrtaiton
WPA (Works Progress Administration)
Had a section dedicated to building infrastructure and buildings
Constructed modern adn technological observatories, hospitals, and other facilities for public use
Built many smaller infrastructure projects like sidewalks, small roads & bridges, markets, playgrounds, etc
20,000 miles of water mains provided water to those that never had any before
Criticisms (PWA)
PWA spent over $6 bil but did not complete all infrastructure
Failed to construct quality, affordable housing
Roosevelts leadership of the program was inefficent
Accepted unskilled laborers, making faults in projects
Criticisms (WPA)
The South recieved 75% less attention and work as the rest of the country
Workers had a poor work ethic, making projects inefficent
Programs (Technology)
WPA (Works Progress Administration)
Hired artists and mediaists to create entertainment easily accessible to the public
Made migrant camps with facilitues
Provided fresh water and transportation to citizens
AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act)
Extended railways to farmers
Created funding to make farming more efficient
Criticisms
WPA
Known as lazy workers, weren't productive
Not very popular among Americans, only 23% actually liked the program
Constantly went up to 100x over budget
AAA
Did not assist small time or nonlandowning farmers
Only raised prices (temporarily) and did not actually directly help farmers
