Women in the Civil War
-
Northern Women
The work of the women in the North soon became a national organization. Women took managerial positions leading the collection, sorting, and dispatching of supplies for the troops.
Working class women did not support the war as much since their husbands were actually the ones fighting on the front lines.

Enslaved Women
Former slaves who reached the Union were offered pay and rations which seemed like a good intention but many of them did not end up receiving anything.
Many ex-slaves encouraged their wives to stay at home since they had been working in fields and in terrible conditions for their whole lives. Even whites in the North discouraged this idea because they thought it was best for both members of the household to have jobs and be able to support their families.
