Each time a volcano erupts, it emits water vapor(H2O), Carbon Dioxide(CO2), Sulfur Dioxide(SO2), Hydrogen Chloride(HCI), Hydrogen Fluoride(HF), and Ash (Pulverized rock and Pumice) into the stratosphere which can go to heights of 16-32 kilometers above the surface of the earth. Gas emissions from volcanoes are a natural contributor to acid rain, on top of this is the effect that magma has on the environment surrounding the volcano. When Mount St.Helens erupted in Washington in 1980, it proved to be the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States destroying habitats, people, and costing the city billions of dollars of post event restoration costs. Soil pH changes and land is uninhabitable for many years post event.
