GMO Noel T.
Concerns
Toxic
"GM plants, such as soybean, corn, cottonseed, and canola, have had foreign genes forced into their DNA. The inserted genes come from species, such as bacteria and viruses, which have never been in the human food supply" (IRT).
Harmful to the environment
Animal testing and abuse
Allergic reactions
We don't know what things are in GMOs so if you are allergic to something in that GMO, you could have a serious allergic reaction that could lead to death.
Side effects
"GM soy drastically reduces digestive enzymes in mice.[21] If it also impairs your digestion, you may become sensitive and allergic to a variety of foods" (IRT).
Labeling
Companies are not required to label whether or not the product has GMOs, so we as customers do not know if our food contains GMOs or not.
Benefits
Stop world hunger
780 million people in the world are starving.
Healthier food
Vitamin A has been added to rice.
Drought resistant plants
Easier production
Some GMOs are designed to allow production companies to skip a step or two in their production process. For example, some GMO milk was made by feeding the cows certain food, so that the milk they produce will be skim, low fat, ect. So basically they can customize their milk based on the food they give the cow.
Bug resistent
Farmers are especially happy about this, because many GMOs are designed to make crops bug resistant, which allow farmers to not require the use of pesticides.
Virus and disease resistent
GMO papaya:
Papayas in Hawaii have been genetically modified
to prevent the Ringspot virus from infecting it.
CLAIM:
GMOs are easier to grow than non-GMOs
They can be made insect resistant and
drought resistant, needing less water.
Counterclaim- Zoie Hernandez:
Yes GMOs can be made insect resistant but in the article, GMOs - Pros and Cons it states "This introduced insecticide, has recently been found in human blood including that of a pregnant woman . This indicates that some of the insecticide is making its way into our bodies rather than being broken down and excreted. This is not healthy for our bodies even if there can be plants made to be drought tolerant and insect resistance we shouldn't be allowed to eat it if it could be harmful to us.
Counter-Counter-Claim:
Yes, insecticides can be harmful to humans, but not all
GMOs contain insecticides, so there are still many GMOs
that are totally safe.
