The Moon
- The Surface of the moon is covered in grey dust and rocks, and craters. The craters were formed when large rocks crashed into the moon. The largest is Aitken Basin. It is situated at the moon's south pole and is 2500km in diameter and 13km deep.
-
- Soon after earth was formed a large planet sized object may have collided with it throwing giant rocks .These rocks clumped together and formed the moon .
- earths moon is four times smaller than earth . it is the fifth largest moon in the soler sistem and is 3475km in diameter
- The moon is about 385,000 km away from earth .If you were travelling in a car at 80 km per hour it would take 200 days to get there
- each year the moon moves about 4 cm away from earth .the moon has less gravity than earth you could jump 6 times higher on the moon and weigh 6 times
- The moon has no atmosphere and therefore it gets really hot during the day 130 degrees celsius and really cold at night minus -170 degrees celsius .
- The moon has no weather. Footprints left by astronauts on the moon's dusty surface will remain there for millions of years.
- In 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts planted 6 American flags on the surface of the moon. After 40 years photos showed that 5 flags are stills standing, 1 blew away by exhaust of Apollo 11.
- There are many mountains on the moon. At 5500 metres, Mons Huygens is the highest.
11.the moon has no water but it dose have black spots were lava flowed and people called this the seas . the most famous of these seas is the sea of tranquility
- scientists now think that there might be ice on the moon and if there is humans may one day be able to live on the moon

20.the moon orbits earth and earth orbits sun .when the three line up earth casts a shadow on the moon and this results in a lunar eclipse.
- a total lunar eclipse occurs when the hole moon is covered by earths shadow . this happens once or twice a year and the moon appears red/brown in color.
- in 1959 the first man made object to visit the moon was the soviet unions unmanned probe luna two.
23.on july 20th the amercian apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon. neil armstrong was the first man to step on the moon saying the famous words 'That's one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind'. He and Edwin Buzz Aldrin spent 2 hrs walking on the moon collecting rock samples.
