OBJECTIVES OF THE UN

To maintain international peace and security and to take effective measures for the removal of threats to peace
To develop friendly relations among nations and to achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social and cultural problems
To harmonise and coordinate the actions of all nations in order to attain the aims, objectives and purposes
PRINCIPLES OF THE UN

All member nations must fulfil their obligations faithfully. They must settle disputes peacefully and must not intervene in the domestic/internal affairs of any other nations

FUNCTIONS OF GA
ELECTORAL FUNCTIONS : Elects the Sec-Gen of the UN on the advice of the SC. Elects the non-permanent members of the SC and members of Economic and Social Council. Elects judges of ICJ along with SC.
FINANCIAL FUNCTIONS : Considers and approves budget of the UN. Expenses are borne by members as proportioned by the GA.
AMENDMENT OF UN CHARTER : GA can amend charter. Amendment must be passed by 2/3rd majority and ratified by 2/3rd members including P-5.
FUNCTIONS UNDER UNITING FOR PEACE RESO : Empowers GA to suspend decision of SC. If due to lack of unanimity among members of SC, SC unable to take a decision, GA can take decision. Can make recommendations for the use of 'collective forces' including the use of armed forces in case of aggression or breach of peace.
FUNCTIONS OF SC
SC may take military action which may include operations by sea, air or land forces supplied by members.
SC will ask parties to disputes to seek to settle disputes by arbitration, negotiations, mediation, judicial settlement or other peaceful means.

Electoral Functions : Participates in election of Judges of ICJ. Sec-Gen appointed by GA on recommendation of SC. May ask ICJ for advisory opinion.
FUNCTIONS OF ICJ
COMPULSARY JURISDICTION : A large number of treaties provide that disputes arising under them be submitted to the Court. Disputes pertaining to international law. Reparartions.
