Golding uses Piggy to represent the weaker members of society who my not be as physically fit or attractive but still are intelligent. Furthermore he could represent the lower classes as he is the only one of the boys who talks differently and appears to lack grammar

Piggys death
Piggy's death contrasts to Simon whose is dignified, symbolic and almost spiritual. Piggy's death is comical and at the same time destroys the conch, which can be seen as the destruction of society and the 'voice of reason' (Piggy)
