  - - - Gene wants to be valedictorian and hates Finny. Seems very quiet during the whole movie, keeping things to himself.
    - - Is very athletic and has no worries. Has endless energy through the whole movie.
    - - The book nerd that Gene wants to bet. Is obsessed with Hitler.
    - - Has a snail farm and is " the weird one". Decides to enlist first and ends up hiding in a hut in the woods.
  - - - Gene is jealous of Finny because of his talent in rule breaking and being able to get out of it and his athletic ability.
    - - World War 2, battles, personal wars, and enlisting are always on the minds of the boys at Devon. Gene fights a private war with Finny and Gene begins to see Finny as an enemy who threatens to overshadow his success.
  - - - Always is happy go lucky and doesn't have a care in the world.
  - - - Hates Finny and only cares about himself.
  - - - There really is no narrator or voiceover we see and hear everything from the boys, however we do get some insight to how Gene feels.
  - - - Gene often feels like he has to make it up to Finny, but doesn't do much too make it up to him.
  - - - Finny is fighting a war with Gene and Finny is fighting a war with himself.
    - - Symbolizes the end of summer at Devon.
  - - - Brinker, Leper, Finny, and Gene see senior boys training for war by jumping into the river from the tree.
    - - Finny falls from teh tree to his doom and the doctor says he won't play sports again.
    - - The movie starts with Gehe on trial , then it flashs back 7 months to Gene first getting to Devon as a student.
    - - The weigh is lifted off of Gene's shoulders after Finny dies. The movie doesn't show the funeral of Finny.
