Exposition:gene is back at his old high school he is walking through the campus then has a flashback to when he first met finny
Falling Action: Leper is the first boy at Devon to enter the war and Finny has returned. Leper comes back for the trial and tells everyone Gene jostled the limb. Finny then falls downstairs and breaks his leg.

Resolution: Finny ends up dying in his surgery and now Gene looks back on how his jealousy was the cause of Finny's death

Symbolism: The tree represents evil and the winter sessions become harsh because they're not used to finny not being there. And the winter symbolizes the coming of adulthood and the encroachment of the war.
Quote: "I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little". This starts the jealousy between Gene and Finny and gene realizes he can get away with anything.
