What?
- It is the sacrifice of the body and blood of Jesus Christ, that was entrusted to the Church as a sign of unity, charity. and the paschal banquet
- It is the source and summit of all Christian life. It binds the Church as a whole. Communion with Christ and the entire people of God is done through the Eucharist, thereby having a foretaste of eternal life, uniting us with Christ and the Church in Heaven, with the Virgin Mary and the saints.
- Common names: Holy Mass, the Lord's Supper, the Breaking of the Bread, Holy Communion, etc.
- You need: Wheat bread and grape wine.
- Those who participate in the Holy Eucharist offer up all their trials, tribulations, and intentions, therefore also becoming as a sacrifice with Christ during the Mass.
- The kind of worship that the Eucharist promotes is the adoration that is given to God alone.
Transubstantiation- the change of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, but not seen physically, through the intercession of the Holy Spirit.
The Altar is the symbol of Christ, who is present as the sacrifice and the food from Heaven.
- One can participate in the Eucharist if they have the proper disposition, and that they are obliged to participate at least once a year during Easter, as well as during every Sunday or holy days of obligation.
To receive the Holy Communion, participants must be baptized and to be in a state of grace, while obliging with the tenets of the Church, such as the dress code, and to not have a grave sin, which can be reconciled through the Sacrament of Penance.
The Holy Communion preserves and increases our union with Jesus and His Church. It also renews our life of grace and makes us grow in love for the people.
It is possible for other Christians to receive Communion, but only if necessary, are asking from their own free will, has the required disposition, and holds the faith in high regard.
Significance:red_flag:
- Instituted during Holy Thursday, the night Jesus Christ was betrayed.
- Foreshadowed in the Old Testament through the annual Passover Meal. celebrated by the Jews. Also told in Jesus' teachings and so was instituted during the Last Supper, done by breaking bread and sharing wine with the Apostles, blessed, and asked them to "do this in memory of me."
- Liturgy of the Word - participants are proclaiming and fully listening to the Word of God
- Liturgy of the Eucharist - when the Bread and Wine are turned into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, through the prayer of the priest and the blessing of the Holy Spirit.
- All this is presided by a full-fledged Priest of the Church, who acts as the representation of Christ during the Holy Eucharist.
Memorial:red_flag:
- The Eucharist is memorial since it makes it actual and present the sacrifice Jesus offered to the Father on the Cross.
- The sacrifices of both the Eucharist and the Cross are the same. only the manner of offering is different.
- The breaking of the bread does not divide Jesus Christ. He present in all Eucharistic enactments, and will continue to be present as long as the Eucharist stays.
- We know of the Holy Eucharist as the Paschal Banquet because Christ is present in his Passover and gave us his Body and Blood, as our food and drink, therefore we become united to him and to others because of the sacrifice
