Respiration
During exhalation, oxygenated air goes from posterior air sacs to lungs and deoxygenated air leaves through the trachea
During inhalation, anterior air sacs are filled with deoxygenated air that came from the trachea. Posterior air sacs are inflated and filled with oxygenated air coming from lungs
Birds require high amounts of oxygen for efficient cellular respiration leading to efficient muscle contractions

Characteristics
-
Feathers
Contour Feathers
Spaces/holes in between that decreases air resistance - found on upper part - responsible for flight
Down Feathers
No spaces in between - found underneath contour feather - responsible for insulation - softer than contour in texture
Behaviors
Preening
Preen gland secrets oil that adds waterproof coating to feathers to reduce friction + insulate body temp
-
Lightweight Bones
Lightweight strong skeleton with a lot of cavities of air that can withstand force exerted by muscles
