synchronous motor
CONSTRUCTION
electrically identical to alternator
stator
3-ph windings
rotor
salient pole
smooth cylindrical type
number of alternate N and S poles
excitation
D.C.shunt generator
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
not self-starting
stator produces flux
constant in magnitude
revolves in synchronous speed
like magnet rotating @ sync.speed
when supplied with 3-ph supply
rotor when excited
has north and south poles
attract or repel the nearby stator pole
tries to rotate accordingly
nearby stator pole changes
every half period
cannot follow the stator pole changes
due to large inertia
subjected to rapidly reversing torque
remains stationary
hence
how to start
