HIERARCHY AND DOMINANCE
-
Forming Hierarchy
-
-
Who has most to lose?
-
Horse C suffers from Sweet Itch, so having access to a scratching post is very important; concedes to Horse A and Horse B on other resources, but is dominant over both when it comes to scratching post.
Many horses concede straight away; no sense for a smaller, weaker horse to challenge bigger, stronger horses
Pair Bonding
If Horse D is pair bond of Horse E, they may have a combined higher rank as a pair than seperately
Who is the leader?
-
Recent studies show
Movement initiated by departure of female; horse in lead does not threaten or chase - they are simply followed (or not)
-
Any member of the herd can initiate departure; but high ranking horses are more likely to be followed
Most motivated horse initiates departure; e.g. marches towards water often initiated by lactating mares as they need more water
