Metaphors
Direct comparison of two unlike things. "He uses metaphoric language in which Antonio's loan of money... [is] an arrow" (xxii).
Puns
Puns are plays on words that sound similar but have different meanings. "We all expect a gentle answer, Jew" (4.1.35).
Similes
Comparison of two things using like or as. "It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven / Upon the place beneath" (4.1.191-92)
Writing Style
Uses language the audience would understand. "the speaker is thus given language that helps to carry the idea... to the audience" (xxii).
Relied on actors to bring the words to life. "The actors will have worked out the sentence... so that the meaning is clear" (xviii).
Helped develop personalities of characters. "to give a character his or her own speech patterns" (xvii-xviii).
Writing Structure

Words are re-arranged and inverted to put emphasis or increase flow. "Sometimes in order to use a line's poetic rhythm to emphasize a particular word" (xvii).
Meant to be acted, not read "What we are reading is a performance script" (xxiii).
Wordchoice
Uses words that no longer exist. "sooth (i.e., truth)" (xvi)
Words with different meanings might change the sentence. "we find the word still where we would use "always," (xvi).
