    - - Usually contains rectangular cells. They have thick, strong walls. Often have a waterproof layer (cuticle) on their outer surface

        Long narrow tubes formed when the sloping walls of cells overlap
        
        Have openings called pits to allow water to pass from cell to cell

        Are less efficient and more primitive
      - Vessels
        
        Larger. The end walls of the cells break down in vessels to form hollow tube
        
        Have lignin and are very common in flowering plants and in trees, where form the wood.
    - - Consists of many cells joined together to form long sieve tubes
      - The walls have many pores (sieve plates)
      - Tubes don't have nuclei, but each accompanying cell contains a nucleus. Controls the activity of the phloem element.
