The Encounter (Moments (End rant about Western culture; we can't…
The Encounter
Lighting
The lighting served to illuminate but also provided direction for the audience. It was suggestive and guided our attention.
-
-
Projection was used for mood and setting as well. Examples include flames, forest patterning, hallucinogenic scenes
-
Acting
So much tech that the acting seemed incidental, but it is more nuanced than that
-
When playing recordings, Katz stepped back and was a facilitator rather than an actor - Brechtian technique - the actor as a vessel for meaning/theme
-
One-man show - simplicity, scaling it back, storytelling, less crowded and representational; removes need for realism
We are listening to a story told by one person, like we would in any other setting
Katz physicalised the imaginary settings, helping the audience to visualise
Amazon Beaming
Amazon Beaming was written by Petru Popescu in 1991 after Popescu met National Gegraphic's Loren McIntyre.
-
-McIntyre attempted to discover the Mayoruna people in 1969.
-Followed these people into the jungle.
-Unable to communicate, participated in their culture.
-His presence divides the tribe; Redcheeks tries to kill him.
-Discovers a mysterious way of communication by Barnacle.
-During a flood, gets swept downstream for several days
-McIntyre goes on to discover the beginning of the Amazon, now known as Laguna McIntyre.
-The events of The Encounter primarily follow Amazon Beaming.
"There is no Complicite method — what is essential is collaboration, and a turbulent forward momentum"
Famous for making its work through extensive periods of research and development which brings together performers, designers, writers, artists and specialists from diverse fields to create the works – a process now known simply as ‘devising’.
-
Set
-
-
-
-
It became more disorganised and chaotic as the play progressed and McIntyre's perception of reality and time changed
Moments
The small child was used a break from the narrative that emphasised the theatricality of the performance
-
End rant about Western culture; we can't forget our past and find our beginning because we are immersed in the past
"Everything is just fucking plastic,. Fuck it, let's destroy the past. Why can't we burn our past? It's backed up on the cloud! Steve Jobs has my fucking memory!"

Directorial Concept
Director: Simon McBurney
-"We only see the version of the world we want to see"
-Engaging with the unfamiliar
-"Our ears...form a filter, help to create a 'normal' reality, but one in which we hear 'selectively.'"
-The director wishes the audience to feel the dislocation and experience the change in time along with McIntyre
Sound
-
The other senses are out on the backburner. Isolating one sense only can help audience empathise with isolation
The sounds all came from different sources. With headphones on, we cannot perceive the source of the sound - which are recorded? Which are live? What is our reality?
The soundscape was created to place us in McIntyre shoes. It was totally immersive and, as McBurney suggests, helps to create a 'normal' reality
