Feudalism

The Warring States Period was around 770 to 453 B.C.E
The Warring States Period was when a number of small states grouped into six or seven larger states that warred for power
Mandate of Heaven
The Zhou Dynasty claimed they had the mandate of heaven
heaven was a high power and the king was considered the son of heaven
Daoism
founder background
Laozi
author of the Dao De Jing
lived in the 500s B.C.E
worked as an advisor for the Zhou court
At 90 years old he left politics
left China but before leaving a soldier told him to write his teachings before leaving
teachings
based on the idea of the Dao or "the way"
force that gave order to natural universe
taught people gained happiness and peace by living in harmony with the way of nature
true harmony comes from balancing the opposite forces of nature, called yin and yang

lived from 551 to 479 B.C.E
born in the state of Lu in eastern China
experienced first hand disorder that erupted when the lords fought for power
in 722 to 481 B.C.E his state was invaded many times
teachings
goal was a just and peaceful society
society worked well when all people acted properly
basic relationships
ruler and subject
husband and wife
father and son
older sibling and younger sibling
friend and friend
all people must respect those above
those above should set a good example for those below

attracted many students after he died
students spread Confucius teachings
Confucianism had an affect on the government a later dynasty the Han dynasty
because of Confucianism civil servants under the Han were hired on the basis of their ability
before they were hired, they were expected to know the Chinese classics in detail

in church were supposed to respect those higher in the congregation
i have to respect my parents and teachers because they know better than me and they only want the best for me
what I think and feel about it

They get to shop an example to those below so they can know how to behave

based on idea of people being naturally selfish
legalists said people always pursue their own self-interest
could not be relied upon to have a good influence on one another
rulers should create strict laws
reward those who follow the laws
punish those who dont

had almost immediate influence in China
Qin dynasty rulers admired Hanfienzi;s writings
Qin rulers used legalism to get a good society
