Social Intelligence and the biology of leadership
Social Intelligence is a set of interpersonal competencies built on specific neural circuits that inspire others to be effective.
Learn the kind of social behavior that reinforces the brain's social circuitry (leading effectively is less about managing social situations, than about developing a genuine interest for fostering positive feelings in the people whose cooperation & support you need.
Self-conscious attempts to display social intelligence can often backfire, since our brains uses less adept circuitry to initiate and guide movements (making the interaction feeling forced). To develop our social circuitry effectively we need to change our behavior.
Framework of social intelligence
Empathy
Attunement
Organizational Awareness
Developing Others
Inspiration
Teamwork
Spending time with a living , breathing model of effective behavior provides the perfect stimulation for our mirror neurons, which allow us to directly experience, internalize, and ultimately emulate what we observe.
Empathy & self-knowledge play in effective leadership
Exhibiting empathy & becoming attuned to other's feelings litterraly affects both our and their minds' brain chemistry suing them into a single system.
Social intelligence has a biological underpinning
With mirror neurons, (we detect their actions and reproduce those emotions), in order to create an instant sense of share experience
Non-verbal communication (i.e. laughter, smiles, nods) is more important than the words that are actually being said. So being in a good mood helps people take in information effectively and respond nimbly and creatively.
Having good instincts is widely recognized as an advantage for a leader in any context. Which is an ability to recognize patterns, usually born of extensive experience (intuition).
Spindle cells trigger neural networks that come into play when we have to choose the best response among many (prioritizing or help us gauge whether to trust someone)
Oscillators coordinate people physically by regulating how and when their bodies move together
Social intelligence is especially important in crisis situations
New ways of scientifically measuring human development start to bear out these theories and link them directly with performance. So in a World where bottom-line performance is everything, the soft side of the business begins to gain importance, since they have a huge impact on them.
