Pearl diving is financially draining. Sometimes, if the season is not fruitful, pearl divers will make barely any money at all. Being a pearl diver is a risky career. You risk not being well fed, and living in a old shelter.
There is always a risk of drowning if the diver does not reach the surface in time. Divers had to hold their breath for 90 seconds or longer, which is dangerous.
Income and living
Pearl divers don't have a steady income. If the season is fruitful, the pearl divers could make a fortune is a few months. However if there are few pearls, the divers must run off of little-no money.
Equipment
Cotton hoodie and heavy pant to protect you from the jelly fishes
Fish nets were used to collect oysters while diving, was usually worn around neck for stability.
Special curved knife to cut open the pearls.
Nose clip when diving.
Copper scoops is used for picking the pearls.
Baskets where they would store their collected pearls.

History
Pearl diving began over 1,000 years ago, long before the UAE was discovered. Pearl diving then was much more dangerous then, and gradually got safer as new technology and gear was invented.

Recent Collapse
The main reason pearl diving had a recent collapse is due to the many other precious natural resources found in the UAE. Pearls were later less expensive than other resources like oil.
Past Success
Pearl diving was a grand success in the UAE since it was one of the most precious resources. You weren't guaranteed a wealthy future when doing pearl diving, because of the risky chances of not getting any actual pearls. But because pearls were found everywhere in the UAE, there still was a major success to this career.
Pearl diving was the main source of wealth in the UAE and other Arabian countries before oil was discovered, and was a very famous job.
Dhows
A dhow is a boat that is used for pearl diving. It is a wooden, thin boat with a large white sail. Some dhows have two sails, rather than one, if the boat is bigger
Pearl diving season and timings
The best harvest season is usually between April and September.
Pearl divers are usually underwater for 60-90 seconds per dive. They would dive up to 30 times every day!
