Liberal Democrats
-
2010 General Election
The party achieved 57 MPs in the election, which is fewer than they had before. However, they did receive a larger proportion of the public vote.
Because no party held a majority, the Lib Dems held the balance of power- whoever they agreed to a coalition with would form the next government.
After negotiating with both sides, they entered into coalition with the Conservatives.
Their coalition agreement meant they had to go back on some of their manifesto promises, including their proposed cap on tuition fees. As a result, they suffered heavy losses in the 2015 General Election.

Origins
The Liberal Democrats were formed due to an alliance between the Liberal party and the Social Democrats, who were originally devolved from the right wing of the Labour party.
