The Lymphatic Vascular System
Functions
Passive transport of lymph, lymphocytes and other immunologic factors.
Release of lymph and its contents into the blood vascular system
Drainage of excess tissue fluid (lymph)
Features
Unidirectional flow of fluid towards heart
Valve and muscle assisted flow
Vessels are formed from blind ended lymph capillaries
Filtration via
lymph nodes
for purification and addition of immunologically active cells and materials
Microstructure
No pericytes
Large vessels possess circular and longitudinal layers of smooth muscles in the tunica media
Rudimentary basement membrane
Fine elastic filaments called
anchoring fibres
attach the endothelium to the surrounding connective tissue
Non-fenestrated endothelium
The large vessels contain vaso vasorum and nerve fibres
Blind ended, thin walled, endothelial lined capillaries
