B1 Chapter 5- Energy In Biomass
Pyramids Of Biomass
Biomass-mass of living materials
Pyramid of biomass-represents mass of organisms at stages of food chain
Green plants transfer solar (light) energy which is then passed through food chain
Pyramid of biomass
Pyramid of numbers
Energy Transfers
Energy waste between each stage of food chain- not all energy taken in by organism results in growth of organism
Not all food can be digested- energy stored in faeces or as urea in urine
Some biomass (food) used for respiration-releases energy for living processes- more movement less energy for growth
Animals that need constant temperature- energy from previous stage of food chain used to keep animal at normal body temperature
Energy from respiration eventually transferred to surroundings
Decay Processes
All organisms take up nutrients, if they didn't release them nutrients would run out
Detritus feeders-start process of decay by eating dead organisms and producing waste materials.
Decay organisms- break down waste or dead organisms
Decay organisms- microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) called decomposers.
Decay is faster if warm and wet many need oxygen
All nutrients from waste and dead organisms-recycled returning nutrients to soil
Humans can recycle waste- sewage treatment plants and compost heaps
The Carbon Cycle
Recycling of carbon involves photosynthesis and respiration
Photosynthesis-removes CO2 from atmosphere
Plants also respire-returns CO2 to atmosphere
Burning trees- CO2 released into atmosphere
Animals eat plants- build the carbon in their bodies
Plants or animals die- CO2 released back into atmosphere through respiration
Stable community-recycles all nutrients it takes up
Recycling Organic Waste
Organic waste- can be recycled from cuttings etc
Organic waste composted in several ways
Waste mixed with oxygen, moisture-energy escape
Gardeners add worms and soil to composters to speed process
Councils collect garden waste- use shredders and bins to compost
