soteriology- study of salvation- rachel lynch
what is the gospel?
why is it important to teach the correct gospel?
teaching the wrong gospel has terrible consequences
an incorrect gospel will give people a false hope of salvation
a correct understanding of the gospel is a crucial foundation for our walk with the lord
the gospel and foundation information
what is the gospel message?
jesus died for our sins on the cross
jesus was buried
jesus rose from the dead three days later
jesus appeared to over 500 eye witnesses
what is foundational information?
information needed to understand the gospel
examples: what sin is & that jesus is divine and human
not technically a part of the gospel
what does a person need to do in order to be saved?
confusing terminology
let jesus into your heart
giving it all to jesus
accepted jesus as my savior
prayed the prayer
lay your burdens at the feet of the cross
what is faith?
to believe, to trust, to rely on
faith demands an object
faith that is valued before God is faith in the person of God and in his word
worthless of invaluable faith has an object other than God or his word
faith is a simple human response
faith involves human will
illustrations: sitting in a chair & asking someone to move a desk for you
what faith is not
faith is not something supernatural given to us by God
faith is not a work
faith is not an emotion
eternal security
what kind of actions do we think might remove our salvation
certain terrible sins
claiming to not believe in God
denying that Jesus is God and that he died for your sins
what does eternal security mean ?
you can't lose your salvation
how can a person tell that they are saved?
they must believe that jesus died on the cross for their sins
why are we eternally secure?
if you believe in jesus' work then you will have eternal life
you are sealed by the holy spirit in Christ
we are secure because we are kept by jesus
unbiblical ways to evaluate our eternal security
our emotions - "I don't feel saved"
our good works- "I am not doing enough good works to be saved"
salvation diamond
just like a diamond has many faces, there are many aspects to a person's salvation
justification
key passages
Romans 3:21-31
Galatians 2:15-3:14
means to be declared righteous/pronounced righteous by God
illustration: the courtroom
God is the judge
God's law is the prosecuting attourney
humans are the defendant
jesus is the defense attourney
the prosecuting attourney reads out the transgressions which we have committed
our defense attourney steps in but does not defend us. He admits that we are guilty, he offers to take our punishment, and he asks that his right standing which he has with the court to be given to us
the judge considers the offer and then punishes jesus and gives us the right standing with the court
we leave the court justified, declared legally righteous
aspects of justification
justification is available to all who believe
justification is a free gift from God
justification is by grace
justification is by faith and not by law
results of justification
jesus has taken our condemnation and we are legally righteous before God
we have bold access to God's grace
we should have humility before God and others
adoption
the act of God where he places believers into his family
benefits of being adopted by God
we are considered his children and we call him father
we have unhindered access to God
we are in a community with many other siblings
God disciplines/trains us; we are not abandoned
redemption
to purchase sinners out of the slave market of sin
the old testament illustration is when the Israelites crossed the red sea after moses led them out of slavery in Egypt
scripture says that people are slaves of sin and the devil
even believers can live in captivity to sin or as slaves to sin
believers are said to be freed from the authority of sin
sin while still present in us, is not our master; we have the choice to walk in the flesh or in the spirit
one day our bodies will be redeemed; they will be freed form the presence of sin
sanctification
a process where we work with God to live according to the spirit and to have our behavior become more christlike
comes from a greek word meaning "to be holy or set apart"
to be set apart from sin and set apart to God
viewed from three different phases
past- we are viewed as sanctified
present- we are viewed as being in the process of being sanctified
future- we hope that in the future we will complete sanctification
two aspects of our sanctification
both are found in jesus' "high priestly" prayer
jesus is in the father and the father is in jesus
jesus prays that christ will be in us and that we will be in christ
our identification with jesus- we are in the "in christ" club
all those who believe in the gospel are identified with christ
ephesians 1:3-14
characteristics of being identified with jesus
we are no longer under condemnation
we are blessed with all spiritual blessings
we are holy and blameless before God
we are given all things that pertain to life and godliness
we are a citizen of heaven
we are dearly loved
we are freed from the authority of sin
what is true of jesus is true of us
what does this practically mean fro christians?
we should see ourselves from God's perspective as identified with jesus; this is our true identity before God
we should view other believers from God's perspective as identified with Jesus
jesus is dwelling in us through the holy spirit
It is important for us to remember the image of a tree and its roots- Sin produces sins in both believers and unbelievers
paul describes the struggle he experiences when he desires to do good but discovers that sin is still right there with him
Paul realizes that he has the old nature (the flesh) and the new nature (desire to please God)
Paul also recognizes that he needs to have the Holy Spirit to show the character of Jesus through him
To “walk according to the Holy Spirit” means that a Christian should live his/her daily life in dependence on the Holy Spirit in order to be able to produce the character of Christ in him/her
