Traditionally we do practically nothing prior to the commence of the course.
Before the commence of the course, students were asked to spend about 1-2 hours to read email/watch videos/set up software. The heavy load of work itself a precaution on the course: If a student doesn't have enough time to meet the requirement for the course, he or she should not join the course.
Never underestimate the reluctance of the students in trying something new, especially when there is no absolute need. Therefore it is the teachers' job to make it so.
