Technology in the Law Office Paper
Would like to do three topics on this chapter
Chapter 1 (Technology in the Law Office)
I am going to cover the different functions of video conferencing not provided in the chapter. This article
http://www.lawtechnologytoday.org/2014/08/mobile-videoconferencing-depositions-good-go/
goes mostly over how this can be used for depositions, but has a list of other important things that can be done with it. If I can get a sentence out of each one of the last one, I should be able to get a full page out of this article. :check:
Chapter 4 (The Internet, The cloud, and Communications)
First Topic I'm Going to Cover is going to be the different kinds of modems and their capabilities
Firstly, Modems are used to take digital signals and data from your computer and interpret them, then send them to another computer through the internet. In other words, it is your portal to the internet. :check:
http://ittoday.info/AIMS/DCM/50-10-18.pdf
This article from IT today shows tons of different usages for modems, and the different types. :check:
Second topic will be on domain names.
Firstly, I will discuss the difference between a domain name and a URL. A URL is the actual formal address for the site. These can be broken down even more though. If you experiment and copy and paste the URL from a random page within the website, it will take you right to that page. It is like dialing a telephone number and then the extension. The domain is the name that we know. For Example, Facebook.com or Amazon.com. This is not the address, but the name given to the address. :check:
This article goes over the most expensive domains ever sold
http://www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-domain-names-of-all-time-2015-7/#ebetcom--1350000-3
:check:
Third Topic is going to be the cloud, but in regards to rental of cloud space.
Mention the unboxing video of the people unboxing a petabyte and hooking it all up in row? Why would anyone need that much storage? They plan on renting it out over the cloud. :check:
This article talks about the differences between the different types of renting and what you are getting with each.

:check:
Chapter 11 (The Changing Face of Discovery and the Basics of E-Discovery)
On page 326-327 of the book, a brief mention is made of the paperless office. This article
http://www.americanbar.org/publications/gp_solo/2014/january-february/how_start_and_run_paperless_office.html
talks about paperless offices and the strategies used to achieve them. :check:
Would Rather Not do 3 topics on this Chapter
Chapter 2 (Ethics and Professional Responsibility in a Technology Age)
http://www.americanbar.org/content/newsletter/publications/gp_solo_magazine_home/gp_solo_magazine_index/conflictsofinterest.html
This article details the different steps an attorney can make in order to not violate conflict of interest. :check:
The topic from this chapter that I am doing is going to be conflict of interest. Remember that there was no set page limit on this paper and if I can't get a full page out of this it is ok. :check:
Chapter 7 (Electronic Databases)
I will explain the different types of databases such as the DBMS (Access and Lexis Nexis) what it is usually used for and how it is generally used. Make sure to condemn its unforgiving factor. :check:
http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1676465
this article is used to show how OneNote can be used as a database. Que Publishing is related to Pearson. :check:
Chapter 12 (Evolving Issues in E-Discovery)
Article on Spoliation
:check:
I am going to cover the issue of spoliation and the spoliation remedies. It will be likely that I also cover the process to determine which types of spoliation remedies are appropriate for the actions taken. :check:
Chapter 16 (Presentation and Trial Graphics)
I am going to cover Graphics Applications. I will talk about Microsoft Visio and also Smartdraw. I will compare Microsoft Visio to the same layout as word when it comes to templates and such and Smartdraw is almost like clip art mixed with office smart art. :check:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/a-free-open-source-alternative-to-microsoft-visio/
This article provides links to free microsoft Visio alternatives that are open source. :check:
Chapter 15 The Electronic Courtroom
There is almost nothing to do this topic on, but I am going to take it from the angle that most courtrooms are very behind. Of course mention the obvious like tvs, sound systems, etc. :check:
This article
http://www.theherald-news.com/2016/09/29/courtroom-of-the-future-operating-in-will-county/ag74y3s/
describes the "courtroom of the future" however it is very unimpressive. Use this to show that if this is what the current standard of the future, then we have a problem. :check:
This article
https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/answerson/virtualization-standardization-technology-future-courts/
talks about the future of the courtroom. It has little to do with tech, but more with eDiscovery. Because the legal field is slow to become modern, the majority of its technological increases will occur to keep up with eDiscovery, and will only slowly become more hightech. :check:
Would be ok with doing 3 topics on this chapter
Chapter 3 ( Computers in the Law Office)
On page 81, they talk about computer viruses very briefly. I will talk about the history of computer viruses. :check:
This infographic
https://www.siliconrepublic.com/enterprise/the-worst-computer-viruses-in-history-infographic
shows a list of some of the worst computer viruses ever. Take a couple a write my page or so. :check:
Chapter 5 (Word Processing)
Pretty much everyone knows about Word and how to freaking use it, so I'm going to cover add-ins and their DLC type nature. :check:
https://store.office.com/search.aspx?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&clickedfilter=OfficeProductFilter%3AWord&productgroup=Word&category=Reference&homchv=0&sourcecorrid=9c21ef6e-63cd-4f37-95e6-fa44521719c0
This is Office's own store for add ins, and most of them are free. :check:
Chapter 8 (Utilities, Applications, and Tools)
This chapter was very hard to go deeper into just because it wasn't really ground breaking information. I picked Encryption software, and I want to cover the current event of Apple making their encryption software even harder to crack.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/jun/15/apple-fbi-file-encryption-wwdc
this is an article about them doing this and thumbing their nose at the FBI. I will give the disclaimer that I am trying not to get too political, but this goes great with the liberty vs. security debate. :check:
Chapter 13 (E-Discovery--The Process)
locating relevant and irrelevant documents.
https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Prasad_Deshpande4/publication/221324921_Automated_Concept_Extraction_to_aid_Legal_eDiscovery_Review/links/55260ee50cf25d66dc947af4.pdf
Deshpande, Prasad M., et al. "Automated Concept Extraction to aid Legal eDiscovery Review." COMAD. 2009. This article gives random bits of information on this topic and other related topics for this chapter. :check:
Chapter 17 Electronic Trial Presentation
This chapter would have been almost impossible to do 3 topics on. I am going to do it on trial presentation software. This article from the ABA
http://www.americanbar.org/publications/gp_solo/2014/september-october/technology_courtroom_presentations.html
shows the history and evolution and future of trial presentation software. :check:
Would Not be ok with doing three topics on this chapter
Chapter 6 (Spreadsheets)
History of Spreadsheets, first software was Visicalc in 1979 and has a look that is a mashup between DOS and a Fallout 4 terminal. :check:
Current Spreadsheet Technologies and most used. Excel obviously and also Quattro Pro. Quattro is part of corel pro's word perfect office suite. You have to buy these though. Another newer one is called Libre which has a whole suite as well. The spreadsheet program from this suite is called calc. There is no real difference between any of these and it is almost like going to the store and looking down a soup aisle. No one could know which is the best soup because they are likely all the same. :check:
The New face of spreadsheets is actually Google Sheets and numbers from apple. Google has been providing free software of all types to its users and will easily take over for microsoft in the end. In addition, Apple has Numbers which is compatible with microsoft products; therefore, they bridge the gap. :check:
Chapter 14 (Analysis and Review of E-Discovery)
I will only be covering how to get paper documents out in this section
http://www.sds-usa.com/about.html
This is a local service bureau that I can talk about :check:
Sandeep, Kale. "Reasons Why Documents Scanning Should Be Thought Off." (2013).
http://www.trickswindow.com/reviews/reasons-why-documents-scanning/
Basic information on outsourcing tons of documents, and answers a couple of questions about privacy and the cost burden stuff. :check:
Obviously eDiscovery requires the production of electronic documents, but what happens when they produce tons of paper documents. You can get them scanned in, but that could take your staff years. You can usually hire someone to do this. :check:
