Conclusion

In this respect, I take a pluralist view
Alain de Botton (atheist admirer of religion) : different religions have different strengths = most appropriate + attractive
all religions essentially begin with the practice of upholding key values + morals for man to live in harmony
ironically, the implications of scriptures undermines reason for existence of religion
-
-
-
-
if we all became pluralists + simply practiced morals + values that founded religions = many cultures would arguably lose their identity
culture = amalgamation of social norms, traditions + values
-
without religion, individuals have little reason to associate themselves with others / conform to cultural expectations
thus, culture = reason for vast number of faiths
simultaneously, the very faiths sustain the existence of the cultures
Introduction
how do religions relate to each other: exclusivism, inclusivism + pluralism
-
-
estimated in 2014 there are 4,200 different religions
with rise of anti-islam movements in the west - seems religion = central issue in multicultural society (opposing beliefs = panoply of conflict)
-
- founded upon values + morals that man think should be upheld
-
Inclusivism
however, other religions might contain part truths (if relate to Christianity)
-
-
-
-
- one might be unaware of true faith
but when given chance, should recognise Christianity = right way

further, religion = isolates culture + fosters environment that restricts exposure to other beliefs

-
Exclusivism
-
-
thus, to be religious = one has to make definitive claim about 'ultimate truth'

criticism - Hick
exclusivists (Barth) - one will only be saved if you have conscious + explicit faith in gospel of Jesus Christ
