Symptoms
o 10-12 years ago
o Started to lose weight – lost 2 stone in a couple of months (used to weigh 100+kg)
o Polydipsia and polyuria – used to become so thirsty in the night he was taking litres of squash to bed with him each night, going to the toilet multiple times
o Flash paralysis in legs one day – collapsed to the kitchen floor while cooking, no sensation or movement in either limb
o Second episode of paralysis
Diagnosis
o After second collapse, rushed to GP
o Blood glucose measured at 22.1 – “should be in a coma”
o GP also requested urine sample and blood sample
o Confirmed T2DM

Compliance
Very good - has been told many times that he needs to keep taking his meds and not to eat the "wrong things"

Current Health

Progression
o Very little progression – complains of no negative Sx
o Stopped polydipsia and polyuria
o Knows not to eat lots of sweet things & big meals
o Keeps up with regular tests
o Otherwise no worries – “doesn’t even think about it”
o Has lost lots of weight since the diagnosis (100kg->70Kg)

o J understands very little about the causes of his disease – pathophysiology
o Understands he got it from “eating wrong” and knows not to continue with bad habits
o Knows it affects feet and eyes, “because that’s what they check”
Worries and Concerns
Main Health Worries
Friend with diabetes recently died of lung cancer – was worried that it may be related to his diabetes.

Lifestyle Issues
Diet Changes
Knows not to eat lots of fatty foods and sugar - has lost lots of weigh and also drinks much less beer than he did.

Exercise Changes
Since diagnosis has tried to exercise a lot more - 12km on excersise bike every day since around time of diagnosis
