Pulmonary ventilation
-
Measure
Spirometry:
- Speed/flow air that can be inhaled/exhaled
Flow volume loop
Expiration:
- sharp increase: large airway gets emptied first:
- Gradual decline: smaller airways being emptied
Inspiration:
- Effort at which patient blows out
Time volume curve
FEV1: forced expiratory volume:(l)
- Amount of air blown forcefully 1 second
FVC: Force vital capacity (l)
- Total amount of air forceful blow out
- equal to or more than 80% predicted
-
Diffusion capacity:
- Measures ability of lungs to extract oxygen from inhaled air to pulmonary capillaries
