Stem Cells: no specialization and no differentiation
Red Blood Cell (RBC)
Differentiation:
contains the protein hemoglobin and has a bowl shape for more surface area; no nucleus because the cell does not split
Specialization
: carry oxygen through the blood
Nerve Cell
Differentiation:
have a high concentration of salt to conduct electrical impulses; long and thin to cover greater distance
Specialization:
conduct electrical impulses for communication
Stomata
Differentiation:
have chloroplast that detect light and can open or close depending on if there is light
Specialization:
gas exchange in plants (CO2 in and O2 out)
Muscle Cell
Specialization:
contract to pull and release bones for movement
Differentiation:
have lots of mitochondria to produce lots of energy (ATP)
Sperm Cell
Differentiation:
has an undilopodium (tail) to move and also has an Acrosome that releases enzymes allowing the sperm cell to penetrate the egg
Specialization:
penetrate the egg and fertilize it to eventually form new offspring
Palisade Cells (Leaf Cells)
Differentiation:
have large amounts of chlorophyll and a long shape to absorb light
Specialization:
responsible for photosynthesis in plants
Root Hair Cell
Differentiation:
has hairlike projections and lots of mitochondria for active transport
Specialization:
absorb water and minerals from the soil
Xylem and Phloem Cells
Differentiation:
composed of narrow tubular cells
Specialization:
carry food (phloem) and water (xylem) through a plant
