Detection & Identification of Plant Diseases
Stunted Growth
Diseases, pests and environmental issues *like Phosphrous defficiency) deplete the plant's nutrients
Areas of Decay (Rot)
Can affect any part if the plant
Caused by bacteria and fungi
Decay- hard, dry, spongy, watery, mushy or slimy
Plants lose vigour, become stunted and yellow, and may wilt or die back and drop some leaves.
Spots on Leaves
The fungus produces spores in the black spot lesions on the upper leaf surface and these spread in water to initiate new infections
Majority caused by fungi
e.g Rose Blackspot
Growths
Known as Galls
Caused by Bacteria or Fungi or insects laying eggs in the plant
Malformed Leaves/Stems
Curled leaves and damaged/malformed stems - Caused by Virus or Bacteria
Neurotic and distorted leaf shapes - Calcium deficiency
Presence of Pests
They can introduce fungi and other diseases
e.g. tiny aphids on rose, honeysuckle, and other flowering foliage growth tips in the springtime can cause stunted growth and deformed leaves and flowers. They also bring plant viruses and black sooty mold fungus
Discolouration
Abnormal yellowing of leaf tissue is called chlorosis.
This occurs when the leaves lack chlorophyll
It can be caused by poor drainage, damaged roots, compacted roots, high soil pH, and nutrient deficiencies in the plant
