Types of Reaction & Changes
Chemical Changes
occurs when a substance reacts and forms
one or more new substance
Changes in states of matter
color
odor
also known as chemical reaction
release of heat and light
Exothermic Reaction
a chemical reaction that releases heat
energy released > energy required to break bonds
combustion
Endothermic Reaction
Chemical reaction that absorbs energy and heat from its surroundings.
More energy is needed to seperate the bonds in the reactant.
Energy of the reactants is inferior to the energy in the resulting product.
Heat + Energy (R) = Energy (P)
Total amount of energy before and after the reaction is the same.
Physical Changes
a change that occurs and doesn't change the chemical composition of the substance.
a substance changing from one state of matter to another
the temperature does not change
types of physical changes
freezing
liquid to a solid
melting
solid to a liquid
vaporization
liquid to a gas
condensation
gas to a liquid
deposition
gas to a solid
sublimation
solid to a gas
Example:
when water turns from a liquid to a solid
water to ice
the water molecules stay the same
freezing
when you physically break something
breaking a glass
another form of physical change comes from
blending
dissolving
cutting
