Task 2 consciousness

Consciousness
Two different kinds:
-> just two because once experience=phenomenal and behavior=psychological explanations are there they together pretty much cover everything :3 !
Psychological
--> used for causal explanations / "what body does" (e.g. brain activation increased etc.. )---> overt behavior (measurable) / for chalmers = awareness
Same as:
- third person data (objective)
- easy problem
Not same as block:
- A - consciousness (by Block)
--> used for causal explanations / "what body does" (e.g. brain activation increased etc.. )
Examples:
- awakeness, introspection, reportability, attention, voluntary control. knowledge
---> all the things they try to measure in patients with vegetative state !! NO ONE GIVES HIT ABOUT PHENOMENAL OMG IDIOTS !!
Co-occure together BUT not the same experience :3 !!
--> if sensation (phenomenal) then likely information processing(psychological) at same time
--> if aware of happiness (psychological) then likely caused by internal state (phenomenal
--> however not the same subjective experience can be completely different from objective one! ----> EXPLANATORY GAP (Joseph Levine)
--> experience (phenomenal) without cause = possible!!
------> so bridging to thought experiment zombie = yes possible for it to have same experience even when not experiencing them itself !!! (page 23 yellow +pink)
block says psychological can exist without/independetn of phenomenal and vice versa (BOTH WAYS) (double disassociation )
but chalmers disagrees saysing that psychological can be alone but phenomenal always coorcurs with psychological (is what they say lol (one way)
(psychological leads to phenomenal
BUUUTT phenomenal does not have to lead to psychological !! IT can be completely independent (ONE WAY ))
bermudas got this wrong saying they are both the same :3 !!
---> look up black room and psych zombie (see your text notes where explained :3 !!
know in course manual which woul dbe which phenomenal and psychlogical based on chalmers and block :3 !!
also look up what awareness would be :3 !!
chalmers cant measure if people are aware or not cause phenomeal conscious possible without psychilogical
BLOCK = what you measure could be either ?
Phenomenal
-> what it "feels like" / subjective experience / qualia--> subjective experience! / for chalmers = real consciousnes
Examples:
- visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory, hot/cold, pain, hunger etc.., mental imagery, conscious thought, emotion, sense of self
Same as:
- first person data (subjective / qualia)
- hard problem
- P - consciousness (by Block)
--> what it "feels like" / subjective experience / qualia
-
like stated in task 1:
first person data (phenomenal subjective experience) = hard to describe or even impossible to describe!
--> because we use normal "nonphenomenal/psychological language" to describe phenomenal experiences cause we dont have an independent language for it!
so best our descriptions of subjective feelings / experiences = vague
--> e.g. the smell of freshly baked bread, or the feeling when you close your eyes after a long night out or something :3!! (page 23)
-
Mind body problem:
Hard vs Easy problem
Hard problem:
--> how can psychological experiences be accompanied / lead to phenomenal / subjective experiences
--> eg. stimuli makes us see the color red, feeling too hot in summer etc..
can't be answered as long as there's discrepancy between first person and third person data which makes it impossible to link the two !
constitutes majority of "mind body problem" (Jackendoff 1987)
- --> e.g why all the stimulation and reaction associated with pain is accompanied by the experience of pain, for instance.
Easy problem:
--> how can physical systems ( body, cells, nerves, neurons..) lead to psychological experiences / properties ?
---> e.g. motor movement, awareness, response to stimulie

make the drawing off the mind body (easy) and mind mind ( hard problem ) and thoroughly understand it :3 !!
