DETERMINING THE EFFECTS OF CARBOHYDRATES ON THE RATE OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION LAB
Background Information
Cellular respiration
Reactants
Glucose
Burned During Respiration
Oxygen
Final Electron acceptor
Products
Water
Chemiosmosis
ATP
Used for...
Flagella and cilia movement
Active Transport in Cells
Cell Division
Photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide
Rate of Cellular Respiration :
Carbon dioxide
More carbon dioxide= faster rate
Less carbon dioxide= slower rate
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O +ATP
Yeast
Single Celled Fungi
Used to make beer and breads
Cause of yeast infections and diaper rash
Experiment
Materials
solutions
glucose
sucrose
starch
active yeast
distilled water
thermometer
pipettes
washers
stopwatch
4 plastic cups
hot plate
2 beakers
4 large test tubes
Variables
Independent Variable
solutions B,C,D
Dependent Variable
amount of bubbles
Control Variables
beaker with water (solution A)
Procedure
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Each person should be responsible for a solution
Use designated droppers, squeeze out air and pick up 1mL of designated solution
add solution to corresponding cups
Step 4
get yeast solution from teacher once everything is set
Step 5
use tall white dropper to add 1mL of yeast solution into each container
squeeze out all air beforehand
Step 6
Step 7
2 more items...
use short dropper to pick up entire mixture of each yeast/carb solution
1 more item...
get 4 test tubes and fill each 2/3 with water from beaker
put test tubes in the beaker
fill large beaker with water, put on a hotplate and put in a thermometer
maintain a temperature between 37 degrees and 42 degrees
