precipitation pg. 167-171
precipitation= any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches earth's surface
types of precipitation
rain
drops of water
sleet
when rain falls through layer of air below freezing, and as they fall they freeze turning into solid particles of ice
freezing rain
raindrops fall through cold air near round but that do not freeze
freeze when they touch cold surface
snow
water vapor in clods that converted into ice crystals called snowflakes
the snowflakes join together into larger clumps
hail
pellets of ice are called hailstones
forms inside cumulonimbus clouds during thunderstorms
eventually become heavy enough to fall to ground
modifying precipitation
long periods of low precipitation are droughts
method of modifying precipitation is cloud seeding which is tiny crystals and dry ice that are put on clouds but is proven to not be effective
measuring precipitation
snowfall measurement
usually measured by stick or by melting collected snow and measuring depth of water it produces
rain measurements
open-ended tub that collects rainfall is rain gauge e
narrow opening of tube helps to minimize evaporation from the measuring tube to insure the right amount of measurement
