Laurier called an election on the
issue to let Canadians decide. He lost

Description
Reciprocity (Free Trade) would
remove the tax from raw materials
that the US must pay.
It would also remove taxes from
many US goods and would encourage
more buying of US goods.
Naval Issue
Descripiton
Great Britain is in a naval race against
Germany. Its biggest and best ship is
the Dreadnaught and it wants its
colonies to either buy some or send
money to build them.
Compromiser
Laurier does not buy ships or send
money. He decides to create a
Canadian Navy to defend itself. It
consists of 6 ships.
Reactions
French Candians don't support the british in any way and feels like Canada should decide its own fate, the english wants Canada to buy ships or send money, and both sides mock Laurier's effort.
Alaska Boundary Dispute
Compromiser
A panel of six consists of 3
Americans, 1 GB and 2 Canadians.
The British needed US support and
sided with the US claim. Canada
loses.
Reactions
Canadians resent the British for their
actions.
Showed that Canada must start to stand
up for itself in world relations.

Boer War
Description
Gold is discovered in a part of South
Africa where Dutch settlers
(Afrikaners) live.
Even though they have lived there for
over a hundred years, the British try
to forcibly remove the Afrikaners.
They resist and a war breaks out.
Great Britain asks its colonies for help
to fight the war.
Compromiser
Laurier decides to allow 1000
Canadians volunteer to to and fight in
the Boer War though GB will have to
pay the cost of outfitting, training
and housing.
Reactions
English think that Laurier should have
supported GB more. The French are disappointed that
Laurier sent any Canadians. Ultimately, both sides are ok with the way it turned out.
