MATERIALS
Plastic- Thermoset
-
Phenol Formaldehide
Hard brittle polymer with a dark color. It is resistant to heat and it often used for the handles of cooking pots and pans.
-
-
-
-
Melamine Formaldehide
Heat resistant polymer used to manufacture tableware, decorative laminates and worktops
Plastics- thermoform
-
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
-
-
Used in drainpipes, double glazing units and patio furniture
Acrylic
Hard, rigid material that weathers well
It is often used for large outdoor signs, because of its properties and because it is available in a variety of colors
-
Manufactured Boards
MDF
-
Dense and heavy material. Uniform texture, surfaces take paint and finishes very well. This also means it absorbs water well
-
Plywood
Made by gluing thin layers (veneers) of wood on top of each other. Each one is positioned 90 degrees on top of one another.
Strong , due to bi-directional grain
Outside faces of the board may be different to the internal layers. Expensive veneers may be used to face the ply to give aesthetic appeal
Chipboard
-
-
Unattractive to look at, the board it not strong in any direction and it flakes and chips easily
Metals
Ferrous
Mostly iron, often have small quantities of other metals. Will go rusty
Mild Steel = Nuts, bolts, girders, Rusts quickly
-
Non-ferrous
Contain no Iron, so they will not go rusty and are not magnetic
Aluminum= Grey/Silver, lightweight. Used for bike frames, ladders, foil.
Copper= Red/Brown, conducts heat and electricity well. Used for electrical and plumbing components.
Alloys
-
Brass=hard yellow, made of zinc and copper. Machines well, self lubricating. Used for boat fittings, musical instruments and door furniture
Pewter= metal used for decorative items (eg. picture frames, jewelry). Tin, antimony and copper. Low melting point, used as cheap substitute for silver.
-
Composites
FRP/GRP
-
woven or strand fibre product is combined with a liquid resin, often polyester if epoxy
-
-
-
Timbers
Softwood
-
-
They are very 'knotty' which can cause problems with the quality of manufacture and increase the possibility of damage to woodworking tools
Hardwood
-
-
Oak
Very strong wood, light brown in color
Used in high quality furniture, open grained timber, not easy to work with
Ash
Used for tool handles, sports equipment and furniture
-
Teak
Oily hardwood that does not rot easily, thus it is used for garden furniture
-
Beech
-
ideal for work tops and chopping boards, and it is also well suited for children's toys
