Industrial Revolution
CONTIUNITY AND CHANGE
Many items are still created by the resources that were used back in this time.
The items created today are more advanced and compact than the items were back then
CAUSES AND EFFECTS
New resources were acquired by Europeans as a result of the explorers and Imperialism.
This allowed the building of better machines and weaponry.
The most important military invention of this era was the machine gun. The earliest variant of a rapid fire weapon was patented in 1870, and the design that would become prevalent in the first war was created in 1907.
#
It was during this time that many new inventions were made.
Early industrial revolution: the steam engine is invented
In 1870 the vaccination was discovered, enabling longer life spans.
1884: The telegraph was invented
The first train in Australia was built 1854.
The railway connect colonies together and allowed for easy trade and transport
Anywhere the railways went, towns prospered with the ability to trade and move.
The railways allowed the people in Australia to keep up to date with everything else that happening in Australia by delivering new news papers, and new goods.
Effects of Imperialism
#
#
CAUSE AND EFFECT
Imperialist European Nations wanted access to trade routes to Asia. To do this, they established colonies that would enable them quicker travel times.
Colonization of occupied lands led to the murder and/or abuse of many indigenous peoples.
as well as creating competition between Nations and societies, which indirectly kick started a chain of events that led to World War One
#
These trade routes allowed for easier material gathering and gain.
#
The trade routes gave acces to cheap labour aswell
CONTINUITY AND CHANGE
While the imperialist Empires of the past have long since dissipated, the ideas of Imperialism remain, and have been the case of many of worst events in liviing memory
World War One
CAUSE AND EFFECT
There was a surge in military competition between countries, by the end of the surge Germany had achieved the biggest military increase, and Great Britain and Germany had a massive increase in navy strength,
These wars with the heave weaponry and machinery used created massive amounts of damage and costed a massive amount.
When the war ended the losing side had to help pay for the damage and expenses that the winners faced. This hit Germany hard.
Germany experienced hyperinflation. Everything was made extremely expensive, and people could no longer afford to live. People that had been saving soon found their savings to be worthless.
At this point, most of Europe was locked in a web of alliances that meant that even the slightest event could send all the countries into conflict.

Britain - France - Belgium

France - Russia

Germany - Austria-Hungary
Austrian Hungarian duke France Ferdinand is assassinated by a Siberian nationalist. Austria -Hungary declares war on SIberia
Russia then joined in to defend Siberia because of their alliance .
Germany saw Russia about to help Siberia against Austria-Hungary, so Germany declared war on Russia.
The French then went to support Russia because of their alliance. The French attacked Germany and Austria-Hungary.
Germany then attacked France through Belgium, which pulled Britain into the war.

France and Britain had created massive empires and were very rich, and other European countries wanted their own empires. This created high tensions between countries.

Movement of Peoples
INVOLENTARY
SLAVES
CONTINUITY AND CHANGE
Descendants of slaves are now free people, but systematic racism and oppression in grained in society still hinder some.
CAUSE
Europeans were travelling and wanted cheap labour.
Slaves were taken and made into extremely cheap laborers
This meant that less people could get jobs as laborers, as all people that could afford them were using slaves.
#
The rich also became rich as they no longer needed to pay high amounts for labour.
CONTESTIBILITY
While rational people agree that slavery in of itself was a terrible crime, some would argue that eventually descendants of slaves were granted civil rights and their own freedoms. The other side of the debate would argue that although this group does have their human rights, their ethnic group is still marginalized and subject to systematic racial oppression.
CONVICTS
#
CAUSE
When new machines started being invented, less farmers became usefull
EFFECT
People had to move to the city because there weren't any farming jobs they could do anymore
The cities became over populated, and there weren't enough jobs for all of them.
People had to steal to survive, which resulted in them getting sent to prison

CONTINUITY AND CHANGE
Descendants of convicts are now free people, and run the land. However, indigenous people still do not have their land and have had to fight hard for recognition of any kind, as well to escape the barriers that society has placed around them.
CONTESTIBILITY
There are several arguments that occur over the History of convicts. Some may argue over if the sentencing of the convicts was just, as many were charged with what would now seem minor crimes, such as stealing bread or an apple. Others would argue if indigenous peoples have been duly compensated or not, a debate that still rages in this country.
VOLUNTARY
SETTLERS
#
CAUSE
Conditions in Europe were terrible, and the promise of a new life spurred on citizens to take the long journey across the Ocean
EFFECT
Setllers moved into lands that they were not entirely equipped to colonies, and empires expanded further.
These settlers were often horrible to the natives, either scarring them away from their homes, or killing them.
This helped gather resources for the empires.

CONTINUITY AND CHANGE
CONTESTIBILITY
Settlers suffered harsh conditions on ships and proceeded to take land from indigenous peoples and build the foundations on which our society stands.
EXPLORERS
CAUSE
European leaders were keen to open profitable trade routes with Asia and sent explorers to seek out new lands and make contact.
The four world zones became connected, worldwide trade began, and the conditions for Imperialism were set.

CONTINUITY AND CHANGE
While finding new lands is no longer part of our society, ripple effects of their actions have indirect effects on the world of today.
