Pangloss and Candide are the only ones to survive a shipwreck. They get to the shore and go to the town of Lisbon where there was just an earthquake. The Portuguese decide to burn a few people to try and prevent future earthquakes. Another one happens and an old lady helps Candide with his wounds.
Voltaire is making fun of how some do not think of others. The guy that went to Lisbon with Candide and Pangloss went and drank and had sex with some girl while people in the village were dying.
"Having found some, he ran off with it to get drunk; and after sleeping off the effects of the wine, he brought the favours of the first girl of easy virtue..." (pg 33) ch 5
