Summary and Analysis: Candide kills Don Issachar after he finds Cunegonde and Candide together. Candide also kills The Grand Inquisitor out of a jealous rage. The Grand Inquisitor gets a proper burial, while Don Issachar is left in the house, while Cunegonde, Candide, and the old women ride off on their horses. Cunegonde's jewels get stolen, and Candide abandons his optimism for a second, and he sells one of their horses for money. The three find a group of people setting sail to the New World, the group was going to fight against the King of Spain. In order for the general to allow the three, along with the horses aboard the ship, Candide had to prove his military background, and how he would be helpful on the journey. The general appointed Candide the captain. Cunegonde starts to lose hope in optimism thinking she has suffered too much, the old woman does not agree, and shames Cunegonde. The woman then tells her life story, she explains that she is the daughter of a pope, and also a princess (when wed at age 14 to a prince), and she was raised in a rich family. Her and the prince loved each other very much, however, during their wedding, the prince's mistress poisoned his drink, killing the prince. Her mother and the old woman went tried to set sail. But were taken by pirates, where they were raped and sold as slaves to Morocco.
