Secret Alliances: No UN or league of nations. Triple Entente consisted of France, Britain, and Russia. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
Imperialism: All of the countries are competing for territories in Africa. This and nationalism resulted in several rivalries.
Nationalism: The countries wanted to rule territory inhabited by their people. Many just wanted independence.
Short-term
Balkan Crisis: Many smaller countries wanted to expand. 1908 Austria annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Serbs wanted it back resulting in conflict
Assassination of A.F.F: He was the heir to the Austrian throne. He was killed June 28,1914, he was shot by a member of The Black Hand who was committed to overthrowing Austrian rule in Bosnia.
New Weaponry
Weapons
Modern Weaponry: Machine guns, planes, tanks, etc. This was more destructive and resulted in a larger loss of life.
Trench Warfare
As a result of the machine guns and flat battle grounds the soldiers had to take cover so they dug trenches to hide in. They were in terrible condition.
