Social Media Influence on News Reporting
Ethical Issues
Social Media can bring forth many ethical issues. They actually mention it in this article. They talk about how quickly our news can spread, even if it isn't factual. That is one of the biggest problems with news on social media.
We, as a nation, would love to think that our news is always right. That couldn't be more wrong, though, sadly. Countless news outlets said that this woman was dead. That is precisely what made this story so famous. She was in fact not dead and she was recovering.
My Reaction
Our news needs to be checked twice and then checked again. I have seen many false stories come out of local news outlets, and even the big ones. Once false information comes out, it divides people. One side believes one form of information and other side believes another form of information. It's exactly how you would imagine it going.
I'm not sure how it could ever be fixed but something definitely needs to be done. Getting 'fake' news or whatever you would like to call it, is rather annoying. Every journalist needs to check their facts and if they're wrong, redo what you already have done.
Devils Advocate
Being a journalist is hard. Sometimes, if you have a completely different story from someone else, you can be looked at badly. Even if everyone else has the facts completely wrong, you don't want to be seen negatively by the public. Everyone receiving the news will more than likely believe the mass majority as opposed to the one person that said differently.
So if a journalist is trying to stay with the mass majority to have a decent reputation you can't blame them entirely. As wrong as that may be.
Reaction to Ethical Issues
Social media should be a love-hate relationship for everyone. It is fun, it provides entertainment, but it can also bring false information.I like to believe that it is overall a good thing but if a reporter get's over confident and posts something to their twitter, there could be consequences if incorrect.
Changing Tactics
Simply wait longer. Learn more information and then report on it.
