B1 Chapter 4- Adaptation For Survival
Adapt And Survive
Organisms need supply of materials to survive and reproduce
Plants need light, CO2, O, and nutrients
Animals need food, H20 , and O
Some organisms do not need oxygen and light
Special features- Adaptations
Allow organisms to survive in particular habitat
Plants adapted to obtain light and and materials efficiently to photosynthesise
Some animals eat plants - herbivores, some eat meat-carnivores
Most organisms live below 40 degrees so their enzymes can work
Extremophiles- microorganisms adapted to live in conditions where enzymes would denature
Adaptation In Animals
Animals not adapted to environment-die
Cold climates
Thick fur and fat under skin
Some white in winter, brown in summer-camouflaged
Bigger animals- smaller surface areas compared to volume- conserve energy, more difficult to cool down
Hot dry conditions
Adapted to conserve water
Adapted to stop getting too hot
Hunt at night to remain cool during the day
Adaptation In Plants
Need to collect and conserve water
Can lose water as vapour through stomata (holes in leaves)
Extensive root system- water collected
Small/waxy leaves/swolen stem- water conserved
Dry conditions
Desert plants (eg.cacti) adapted to conserve water
Some (eg. Mesquite trees) adapted to collect water- root system
Some developed thorns, poisonous chemicals, warning colours- put animals off
Competition In Animals
Competition for food, water, space, mates, breeding sites
Territory large enough for needs
Predators compete with prey
Animals camouflaged- less easy to see
Prey compete with prey
Some animals poisonous and warning colours so not eaten
