"The ABCs of education in Germany”
High school in Germany
In the last year of Grundschule the students can continue at one of three different places.
They are placed into the different types of schools by their academic performance
Gymnasium
1/4 of students go there. It has nothing to with sports or any kind or physical education
They learn the literal translation of high school
Lasts from age 12 to 18 or 19
German school hours
Starts at 8 am
Ends at 1 pm
Not many extracurricular activities
School holidays in Germany
6 week summer break
1 week autumn break
2 weeks of Christmas/winter
2 week Easter/spring
Realschule
Kids can transfer from this to gymnasium
About 1/4 of children attend & they learn the basic subjects about mid-level job in business.
After 6 years the students graduate with a diploma called
Mittlere Reife
Hauptschule
First 1/2 of elementary school children are sent here
5 year program that teaches basic skills, 1 foreign language, & prepares pupils for the job market
Also they learn basic subjects including English
After this they can go to vocational school (2 years long)
Gesamtschule
Parents can send their children here
It is a comprehensive school
Is attended by students of all different abilities
Private schools
About 3,000 private schools in Germany many of which are boarding schools
Often having a longer school day
Berufskollegs
Students between 16 & 19 can undertake a range of work directed studies.
Like economics and specific business studies
Usually directly related to an apprenticeship
