Eternal Security
What does scripture say?
You are sealed by the Holy Spirit “in Christ”
We are secure because we are kept by Jesus
Romans 8:31-39 - nothing can separate believers from the love God
Neither angels nor powers
Neither the past nor the future
Why is sin not mentioned in Paul’s list? Because Jesus has already taken care of that
John 6:37-40 - Jesus promises to lose none of the ones who are his
If you believe in Jesus’ work, then you have eternal life
Unbiblical way to evaluate eternal security
Our emotions: “i don’t feel saved”
Our emotions are not a condition to being saved
Like our citizenship is not emotionally dependant, neither is our heavenly citizenship (“I don’t feel like an American Citizen”)
Our good works: “I’m not doing enough good works to be really be saved”
Examining our good works or lack thereof is to look at the wrong person for salvation: us not Jesus
Our good works are not a condition to being saved
What kind of actions might remove our salvation?
Claiming to not believe in God
Denying that Jesus is God or that he died for your sins
Certain terrible sins
Problem Passages
Hebrews 10:26-27
How does a person get saved?
Confusing terminology
“Accepted Jesus as my savior.”
“Prayed the prayer.”
“Give it all to Jesus.”
“Lay your burdens at the foot of the cross.”
“Let Jesus into your heart.”
Scripture tells us one condition: exercise faith, but what is faith?
The Greek verb is pisteuo- to believe, to trust, to rely on
It is used almost 100x in just the Gospel of John in relation to salvation
The definition of faith demands an object
Faith that is valuable before God is faith in the person of God and his Word, i.e. truth
Faith that is worthless or invaluable is faith in something other than God or his word
To believe, trust, rely on what or whom?
Faith involves human will
Faith is a simple, human response
Illustrations of faith
Sitting in a chair
Asking someone to move a desk for you
What faith is not
Faith is not a work
Illustration: a bank with no withdraw slip
Romans 4:5
Although exercising our faith in Jesus is “good” it is not a good work
Faith is not an emotion
We should not confuse the emotion with our faith
An emotional response can happen at the same time that we trust in God
Faith is not something supernatural given to us by God
Everyone uses their faith everyday
The object of people's faith is what the problem is

Adoption
Benefits of being adopted by God
As his children we have unhindered access to God
As his children, we are in a community with many other siblings
As believers we are considered his children and call him “Father” (“Abba”)
As his children God disciplines/trains us; we are not abandoned
God’s discipline/training is for our good
When discipline is received, God’s children grow in holiness
God disciplines/trains his legitimate children
God’s children are to endure hardships as God’s discipline/training
The concept of “discipline” is closely related to the concept of “training”
Definition of “Adoption”: the act of God where he places believers into his family
Sanctification
The definition of “sanctification”: a process where we work with God to live according to the Spirit and to have our behavior become more Christ-like
The idea is to be set apart from sin and set apart to God
Sanctification comes from a Greek word meaning "To be holy or set apart"
The BIble Project "Holiness"
Sanctification is viewed from three different phases
Future - We hope for a future completed sanctification.
Present - We are viewed as in process of being
3-Minute Theology “Sanctification”
Past - We are viewed as sanctified.
There are two aspects of our salvation
Jesus’ dwelling in us through the holy spirit
Our identification with Jesus - We are in the “in Christ” club
Both are found in Jesus’ “High Priestly” prayer:
Jesus prays that we might have the same relationship: Christ “in” us, and we “in” Christ.
Jesus is “in” the Father, and the Father is “in” Jesus.
Justification
Definition: to be declared righteous
Justification is available to all who believe (Rom 3:22)
Justification is a free gift from God (Rom 3:24)
Justification is by grace (Rom 3:24)
Justified by faith not by Law (Rom 3:28)
Illustration: the courtroom
Characters
Prosecuting Attorney: God's Law
Defense Attorney: Jesus
Judge: God
Defendant: Haman beings
The action
Our defense attorney steps in but he does not attempt to defend us
The judge considers the offer and punishes Jesus while giving us the righteous standing which Jesus had
The prosecuting attorney reads out the transgressions we have committed
We leave the court justified (declared legally righteous)
Results of Justification:
The key passages are Romans 3:21-31 and Galatians 2:15-3:14
Redemption
The Scripture speaks of people being slaves of sin and of the Devil
Even as believers we can live in captivity to sin/slaves to sin
The definition of “Redemption”: to purchase sinners out of the slave market of sin
One day our bodies will be redeemed: freed from the presence of sin
What is the Gospel
It is important to distinguish two important aspects: the Gospel and foundational information
The gospel message
he rose from the dead 3 days later
he appeared to over 500 eye witnesses
Jesus was buried
The gospel message is about a person -> Jesus
Jesus Christ died for our sins
foundational information
This information is needed to understand the Gospel
For example, that Jesus is divine and human
For example, what sin is
Why is it Important?
An incorrect Gospel will give people a false hope of salvation
Teaching the wrong Gospel has terrible consequences
A correct understanding of the Gospel is a crucial foundation for our walk with the Lord
