Causes of the Revolution
TAXES: England Taxed the colonies to pay off war debt from the French and Indian War.(Stamp act, Townsend act, Sugar act, Tea act, Intolerable acts.)
The colonists could not trade freely, England had strict control over trade.
The colonies had no representation in the parliament.
Quartering Act: British soldiers were living in the colonist´s houses.
Important events of the Revolution
BOSTON MASSACRE: Colonists in Boston were shot because of taunting British soldiers.
BOSTON TEA PARTY: Samuel Adams and Paul Revere led the Sons of Liberty to throw tea in the Boston Harbor to protest against tea taxes.
FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS: A gathering of colonial leaders trying to decide what to do about Britain.
SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD: The shot was the first shot of the REVOLUTIONARY WAR. No one knows who shot it.
PAUL REVERE´S RIDE: Paul Revere rode through the night and yelled the BRITISH WERE COMING!!!
BATTLE OF LEXINGTON AND CONCORD: Battle between the British and Patriots- The British won with only one wounded
SECOND CONTINENTAL ARMY: First attempt at republican government for the 13 colonies.
Advantages of the Patriots
They had the advantage of the french helping them.
The French supplied them with food, water, and clothing.
They had strong leadership like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
The Americans also had the advantage of knowing the land.
The Americans knew the land and where they were going.
General George Washington
Born in February 11, 1731
Died in December 14, 1799
George Washington was a surveyor before he was the General of the Continental Army. A surveyor is a person who maps and inspects the land. He was a cartographer.
When Washington was 20 his older brother died. That is when he inherited his family´s home. Then he became a major in the militia. He got promoted to colonel.
In 1758 George left the militia and went home. He got married to Martha. After that, he was elected to the House of Burgesses.
The British had lost the French and Indian War so they had to pay off a lot of war debt. They paid it off hy making people pay more taxes than usual.
General Washington is related to the Revolutionary War because he was in control of the colonists.
George Washington was elected president
on April 30, 1789.
