- winston reads a children's history book about capitalism in the 20th century
- winston describes how the proles live. they are simple, hard workers but live in nearly destroyed building
- winston thinks the book is a lie because he remembers things differently
- he remembers when there where commotions for cause pans for sale
- he thinks about certain history and what the party tells them what happened
- winston is writing in his diary about the proles overthrowing the government
- once when his wife left he found solid documentary the the party was changing
- 3 party members who were part of the revolution have been accused of trading with russia
- after several years they were released then re arrested shortly after being released and confessed to terrorism
- winston found a picture from a news paper of their original arrest and found the charges were false and then he destroyed them
- winston ends the chapter with "i understand how but i don't understand why"
