Gymnasium
Lasts from about age 12 to 19
required for anyone planning on tertiary education
Need to know at least 2 foreign languages and and pass their examination
A student who fails will have to repeat whole school year but not the same one twice
Students have extra classes usually lasting more hours for extra education
School Holidays in Germany
Generally have 6 weeks of summer vacation
One week of Autumn Vacation
Two weeks of Christmas/Winter vacation
Two weeks of Easter/Spring Vacation
High School in Germany
Placed into different schools based on academic performance.
German School Hours
School starts as 8am and is over by 1 pm
Fees are charged based on income
There are after school and preschool programs
There are school groups like theatre and sport associations
Realschule
Most students come here to learn basic skills in mid level job business
If grades are good enough it is possible to transfer to gymnasium
After 6 years students will graduate
Hauptschule
During final half of elementary school children are sent here
5 year program that teaches pupils skills in the job market
They learn basic skills like english
Gesamtschule
Attended by all students with different abilities
Students can also take final exam
Private Schools
Currently 3000 private schools in Germany
There are international schools that are taught in english which prepares students for International General Certificate of Education
Berufskollegs
Vocational school for students ages 16 to 19
Work directed studies such as economics and specific business studies
