The ABC's of education in Germany
Realschule
1/4 attend where they learn basic subjects that will prepare them for a mid-level job in business.
after 6 years they graduate with a diploma called the Mittlere Reife
next step: vocational school where they learn skills put them into middle strata of business
High School in Germany
Grundschule - 4th year of high school
Hauptschule - 5th to 9th year of high school
Realschule - 5th to 10th year of high school
Gymnasium - 5th to 12/13th year of high school
Gesamtschule - combines 3 types of high school
Gymnasium
1/4 of children attend
lasts from about age 12 to 18 or 19
is required for anyone planning on tertiary education
2 foreign languages required
Abitur - examination students prepare for in 13th grade
Students need to pass Abitur in order to get to the tertiary level.
‘Zweig’ - chosen in 7th grade, extra classes/more hours in a subject
School Schedule
From 8am-1pm
6 weeks of summer vacation
1 week of autumn vacation
2 weeks of Christmas/winter vacation
2 weeks of Easter/spring vacation.
if student fails more than 2 subjects they repeat year
if grade needs to be repeated 2x, moved to different school
No summer school
Hauptschule
final 1/2 of elementary school, kids are sent to
5 year program that teaches skills
Gesamtschule
school for students with different abilities
can take final exam "Abitur" here
Private School
are currently about 3,000 private schools in Germany
