The ABC's of German Schools
Germany School Hours
There are of course a host of school groups
Once again a fee is charged based on income.
But there are also a
8am and is generally over by 1pm
School Holidays in Germany
The children generally have six weeks of summer vacation,
one week of autumn vacation,
two weeks of
Christmas/winter vacation
two weeks of Easter/spring vacation.
High School in Germany
They're 3 types of High schools
Pupils placed in different schools
Gesamtschule is usually offered in some regions
Decsicion is made whether pupils will attend the Hauptschule
The system is quite rigid with the pupils placed into the different types of schools
Gymnasium
About a quarter of the children go to ‘Gymnasium
‘Gymnasium’ lasts from about age 12 to 18 or 19
The students then have extra classes or more hours in those subject areas.
At least two foreign languages are required
Realschule
About one quarter of the children attend Realschule
Realschule where they learn the basic subjects which will prepare them for a mid-level job in business
After six years, the students graduate with a diploma called the Mittlere Reife.
About one quarter of the children attend Realschule
Hauptschule
The final half of the elementary school children are sent to the Hauptschule.
They also continue learning basic subjects as well as English.
English. After a student graduates from a Hauptschulethey can go on to a vocational school .
Gesamtschule
Students can also take their final exam
Another option for the parents is to send their children to a Gesamtschule
Private School
The exception to the rule in this whole system is the private schools.
There are currently about 3,000 private schools in Germany, many of them boarding schools.
Berufskollegs
Students normally aged between 16 and 19 (but in some cases also up to 23 years) can undertake a range of work-directed
These studies are usually directly related to an
apprenticeship.
